Caring for Your Skin

Fashion and lifestyle with Erikhumhi Harmony Mary-Jane

Many people believe that skincare is all about preserving the glow and radiance of the complexion, but in reality, it is more than that. Having a skincare routine is very essential for your overall health and well-being.

Your body’s largest organ is the skin. It protects the organs in the body from the harsh climate and hazards we encounter every day, e.g. extreme weather conditions, radiation, infections, and every other harmful substance. If your skin isn’t healthy enough, your body will face many problems.

Skincare does not belong to any particular gender or age grade. In all honesty, everyone needs a proper skincare routine to always keep their body, beauty, and self-esteem in good condition. When I say ‘everyone’, I mean both men, women and even children. It is advisable that you take good care of your skin because you will be wearing it for the rest of your life, so why not keep it at its best to maximise its usage span?

What are the benefits of having and maintaining a good skincare routine?

A carefully-created and balanced routine supports optimal skin vitality.

A good skincare routine improves the health of your skin and helps prevent issues.

The skin protects and defends us against certain extremities that can cause irritations, itchiness, redness, acne, infections, and other severe problems. We, in turn, should help our skin help us by keeping it healthy and refreshed. By building a proper skincare routine, you will be able to keep the skin flourishing in the face of undesirable influence. That way, the skin can fight external elements on its own.

A good skincare routine can help you stay youthful and elegant.

Having a daily skincare procedure at a young age helps slow the effects of ageing. As we gradually advance in age, our skin begins to lose its strength and elasticity, making us susceptible to wrinkles, fine lines, enlarged pores, and uneven complexion. This is because when the cell responsible for the renewal process slows down, collagen production also decreases, and the natural nutrients that keep the skin texture firm and intact become scarce. When we clean, exfoliate, moisturise, and use sunscreen regularly, we open our skin to sufficient nourishment and vitality. You don’t want to look 45 years older when you’re just 28 now, do you?

A good skincare routine boosts confidence and makes you feel good in your skin.

Taking good care of your skin helps to eliminate our biggest insecurities like dark circles, dark spots or hyperpigmentation and improves the skin’s overall appearance and feel. The right products often provide the best results, and at the end of the day, when you look good, you also feel good about yourself. So, clean the cobwebs off those products on your dressing table and start using them ASAP!

Self-Care Can be Fun.

If you’ve had an extra-long or stressful day, it’s always a good idea to allow yourself to enjoy the pleasures of self-care. Using a special face mask or taking the time to try out new skin products cannot only help to bring down your stress levels, but it can also have lots of extra added benefits to your skin. Doing those unique things constantly for your skin will only be beneficial to both your stress and your skin in the long run. Go ahead and ask a doctor; they’ll prescribe the same thing too.

Basic Steps Of A Good Skincare Routine

It’s not only about taking care of our skin; using the right products and sticking to the proper routine also matter. People always complain about the exorbitant prices of skin care products and use that as an excuse for not going ahead with the purchase. I will let you in on a big secret; you don’t have to go over the top to get a good skincare product, but I advise you to do that anyway. Skincare is an excellent investment and one of the best things you can do for yourself.

Regardless, there are a lot of great products out there just waiting for you to try them on. Know what type of skin you have before using a product; many people have sensitive skin, oily skin, and dry skin. Only a few people can boast of having normal skin. What works for a particular skin type may not work for another type. You need to see a certified skin specialist to explain this better and hook you up with the right prescriptions.

So, the next time you’re going product-shopping, these are the essentials you would need to invest in for starters (in order of usage):

PanOxyl, Dr Teal’s, Dove, etc.
  • Cleanser

Cleansing is the first and most crucial step in a skincare routine. It provides a clean base for other products to penetrate the skin and do their job right. You would need to look for a cleanser with a combination of hydrating and balancing ingredients like tea tree oil, salicylic acid, mint extract, vitamin E, benzoyl peroxide, coconut oil, and jojoba oil. Check out products like Neutrogena, La Roche Posay, Topicrem, Cetaphil, Cerave, PanOxyl, Dr Teal’s, Dove, etc.

Molecules, Bolden, Garnier, Klairs, etc.
  • Toner

The remaining impurities and excess oils left on the skin surface after cleansing are eventually removed with the help of a toner. It refreshes and rejuvenates the complexion and reduces pores with its astringent qualities. In addition, a toner ensures better absorption of other products coming after in your skincare line-up. Rosewater is an excellent natural ingredient for your toner. Check out Paula’s Choice, The Ordinary, Good Molecules, Bolden, Garnier, Klairs, etc.

  • Serum

The serum is a fancier version of a moisturiser with advanced formulas and a mix of potent ingredients designed for specific concerns. If you happen to have blemishes, acne scars, discolouration, or rough patches, serums help to return the skin’s lost radiance. The most popular ingredients used in serums are vitamins C and E, aloe vera extract, arbutin and niacinamide. These therapeutic nutrients replenish, refresh and reset your complexion, leaving it with a dewy glow. Check out The Ordinary, Aesop, Tiam, Beauty of Jose

  • Moisturiser

The moisturiser is the most beneficial and necessary of all skincare products. It is up to your moisturiser to maintain your skin’s suppleness, elasticity, vibrancy, and wellness. Find a formula that uses a mixture of suitable ingredients for your skin type; only then can you reap the fullest potential of a moisturiser. Look out for any products containing collagen, vitamins A and E, glycerin, ceramides, aloe vera and plenty of other emollients that boost ultra-smooth skin by increasing hydration levels. Check out Simple, Isntree, Cosrx, etc.

  • Sunscreen

You never know when the sun is going to scourge. Everyone must wear sunscreen before going out, even on a cloudy day. Choose a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30+ for maximum protection. Always apply generously on your face and neck. Check out Missha, Isntree, Altruist, Benton, Dr V Inzincable, etc.

  • Body cream

A body cream can also act as a moisturiser. It helps hydrate and improve the skin tone, making it more radiant and healthier.  If you want to enjoy your skin for decades, try not to use organic skincare products or products that contain hydroquinone. There is a high chance of skin bleaching when you use those products, which would have adverse effects in future. Look out for ingredients containing vitamins A, C, and E, coconut oil, aloe vera, and so on. Products like Eucerin, NatureWell, Medix, Advanced Clinicals, Aveeno, Dove, etc., are known to have one or more of the required ingredients above.

There are more products out there like eye creams, spots and acne treatments, body oils, etc. If you are still very clueless about what products would work for you, I would advise visiting a dermatologist or a skin aesthetician for treatment and product recommendations.

Remember that what works for someone else may or may not work for you, and you have to be consistent to actually see the results of your routine. Your skincare products are not instant magic portions, but when used properly and consistently, they become miracle solutions.
