Dr. Abiodun Omoniyi Amusan- A Man with a Heart for Health Care!

Whenever the story of health insurance in tertiary institutions in Nigeria is being told, one personality that will no doubt feature prominently is Dr. Abiodun Omoniyi Amusan, the Director of Health Services, Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB). Dr. Amusan deserves more than a passing mention in this sphere of health care services in the country not just because he is a medical doctor but because of his passion, commitment and immense contribution to the health, welfare and wellbeing of university students and staff alike.
By a dint of hard work and an illustrious career that has spanned over 30 years, and still counting, Dr. Amusan has helped to shape and assure the future of Nigerian youths who passed through the university system by ensuring the delivery of quality health services to them and other stakeholders within the university community. At the last count, his contribution to the health sector in general and to health insurance services provision in particular has taken him through the Health Services Departments of three top-rated universities in the country. These are Bayero University, Kano, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, and currently Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta.
Born just a few months shy of Nigeria’s independence from the British Colonialists in the rustic but historic town of Edunabon in the present Ife North Local Government Area of Osun State, the young Abiodun had his primary education at St. Peter’s Anglican School II, Bolo Edunabon and C.A.C. Primary School, Lantoro Abeokuta where he finished with A grade in 1972. His secondary education took him to Origbo Community High School Ipetumodu in 1975 to 1980 where he had his West African School Certificate as the 3rd best graduating students on aggregate. He later proceeded to the then University Of Ife, Ile-Ife in 1981 for his training in Medicine and Surgery course. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Health Sciences which he completed in 1985 and then bagged his medical degreee (M.B.Ch.B.) from the same institution in 1988. After his housemanship at University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, Ilorin in Kwara State, Dr. Amusan had his mandatory NYSC at the Nigerian Air Force Medical Centre 303 Flying Training School, Kano, Kano State.
What would later become a journey into a distinguished medical career, leadership role and a life of service to humanity began in Oct 1991 when he joined the Health Service Department of Bayero University, Kano as a medical officer. He later got promoted to a senior medical officer in 1999. He returned to his alma mata, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife Health Services to serve as a senior medical officer in 1999 from which he rose to become a principal medical officer. While serving here, he enrolled for a Master of Public Health degree program. He won a Bill and Mellinda Gate’s scholarship in Population and Reproductive Health under the OAU IFE /JOHN HOPKINS UNIVERSITY BALTIMORE USA PARTNERSHIPon merit.It was from here that he moved to the Health Services department of FUNAAB where he has served and is still serving meritoriously. At FUNAAB, he rose to occupy various positions of administration and leadership which included Deputy Director/Ag. Director, Health Services (2008-2011); Deputy Director/Head INHURD, Health Services (2011-2014); Deputy Director, Health Services (Main Campus, 2014-2016); Acting Director, Health Services (2016-2019) from where he rose to become the current substantive Director, Health Services.
Additionally, Dr. Amusan is a Fellow Institute of Health Insurance and Managed Care Nigeria and a Fellowship Award of Nigerian Institute of Corporate Administration.
In his current role as the University’s Director of Health Services, Dr. Amusan leads a multidisciplinary team of medical professionals and administrators responsible for providing qualitative healthcare for the over 1,000 staff members, 20,000 students of the institution as well as hundreds of residents within the university’s immediate environment. Beyond his primary duties, and as a senior member of the university staff, Dr. Amusan has over the years taken up special assignments and served in various committees of the University few of which included Member, Appointment and Promotion Committee for Non-Teaching Staff, Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, (FUNAAB, 2016 Till Date); Member, FUNAAB Sports Committee (2017 till Date); Member, Ad-Hoc Committee on Profile of Non-Teaching Staff who had spent five (5) years and above on CONTTISS 13 as at July, 2017. (2017 till Date); Chairman, Electronic Health Record System (EHRS) Implementation Committee of ICPD Board (2018) and Chairman ICPC ANTICORRUPTION AND TRANSPARENCY UNIT from 2014 to 2018. He handed over to the currently existing ACTU in FUNAAB.
He has attended and represented the University in various health and health insurance conferences, seminars and workshops aimed at deepening the service quality delivery to federal employees under the Formal Sector Social Health Insurance Programme (FSSHIP) and also to students under the Tertiary Institutions Students Health Insurance Programme (TISHIP) which has prepared him for the leadership responsibility that he now holds.
And in recognition of his passion on the job, commitment to the health and wellbeing of the university community and his proven leadership capability, Dr. Amusan has been a recipient of various high-level commendations and awards from the University Management. Some of these are Vice-Chancellor Commendation (2010) and Vice Chancellor Commendation for maintaining service during the Challenging period of FUNAAB (2017).
A thorough-bred professional and community-oriented man, Dr. Amusan belongs to and has served in numerous professional bodies as well as community service clubs. He was National Liaison Officer, National Association of Doctors in University Health Services (2001-2008); Financial Secretary Nigerian Medical Association Osun State (2001-2002); and Social Secretary, Nigerian Medical Association Osun State (2006-2008). He is currently Patron, Nigerian Red Cross Society FUNAAB Detachment and Chairman, Nigeria Red Cross Society, Odeda Local Government, Ogun State. He was also the 41st President of Rotary Club of Abeokuta District 9110, 2019/2020 Rotary year as United President.
Dr. Abiodun Omoniyi Amusan is a family man blessed with a beautiful wife and lovely children. Although he runs a very busy schedule due to the demand of his job, he however in his pastime enjoys playing the keyboard, watching football and wildlife movies as well as engages in farming.
