Key into NHIS for better health status, Official urges Nigerians

The National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) has urged Nigerians to key into the scheme in order to access quality health care service and improve on their health status.
The Nasarawa State Coordinator of the scheme, Mrs Mary Aliu, made the call on Thursday in Keffi during a stakeholders’ forum, organised for health maintenance organisations (HMOs), health care facilities (HCFs) and enrollees.
Aliu said that the importance of the scheme to human and societal development could not be over-emphasised, hence the need of her call in that regard.
According to her, NHIS has decided to bring the health sector stakeholders together in order to discuss issues that will improve the health status of Nigerians.
This, she said, was aimed at achieving universal health care coverage for all in the country.
“We are all here to deliberate on issues that will move health care in Nigeria forward and enhance the universal health care coverage.
“As you all know that we have a result-oriented NHIS, under the leadership of our Executive Secretary, Prof. Nasir Sambo.
“NHIS is to provide social health insurance in Nigeria, where health care services of contributors are paid from the common pool of funds contributed by the participants.
“It was established by the Federal Government to improve the health of all Nigerians at affordable costs.
“It is in view of this that I want to call on Nigerians to key into the scheme, considering its benefit to human and societal development,” she said.
Aliu commended the NHIS executive secretary for being up and moving the scheme towards further bettering the health status of Nigerians.
She commended the participants and urged them to apply the gains of the forum towards improving the wellbeing of Nigerians.
Aliu urged the HMOs, HCFs and other stakeholders to continue to abide by the scheme’s rules and regulations for improved health status of the people.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the state coordinator of NHIS presented papers on “Accelerating the Drive to Universal Health Coverage” and “Compliance and Enforcement within the Scope of NHIS”.
