The Zamfara State Contributory Healthcare Management Agency (ZAMCHEMA) has commenced the registration of 34,000 vulnerable persons drawn from various groups in the state’s informal sector. Dr. Yusuf Abubakar, The Executive Secretary of the Agency, who made the disclosure at a news briefing in Gusau, on Tuesday, said the 34,000 vulnerable persons included children under the age of five years and people aged 60 years and above.
According to him, others are Internally Displaced Persons (IDP), people living with disability, pregnant women and nursing mothers. He said the approval of the 34, 000 informal sector participants by the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) was in consideration of the state’s security problems, adding that the National Identity Card number (NIN) would be the primary registration criterion for every beneficiary. Abubakar disclosed that the state had approved 180 healthcare facilities for accreditation by the NHIS, who were currently in the state for the exercise, explaining that the facilities included 147 Primary Healthcare Centers, 23 General Hospitals and 10 Private Hospitals.
He added that as soon as the facilities were accredited, the beneficiaries from the formal sector, which include workers and retire persons, would begin to access medical services from the hospital of their choice. And for the informal sector, whose services would be fully paid for by the Federal, State and Local Governments, they will be able to access the medical services once they are registered” he said.
